Original Transmission
C4 Transmission from the front of the car.
Lots of oil on the car.
The PCV valve was missing and a breather was used.
I installed a PCV valve and hose that connects to
the carb.

C4 Transmission Shift Linkage
Stock linkage is connected to the steering column
Stock shift linkage can not be used with Rack-n-Pinion kit
The shift column is sloppy. It is necessary to double check
that the car is in park.
Long term plans are to replace the column shift with a floor shifter.

I ended up using an auto shift unit from a '90 Mustang. It has a cable
shift so no hard linkage to deal with. The C4 for the ranchero works
perfect with the cable pull...since the shift lever is pointing down
like modern 4r70w and AOD cable type shifters
Transmission Speedo
Cable and all works fine. I believe the speedo is a little off.

The new 4r70w came with an AWD output shaft and housing on it. I had a
2wd shaft andhousing installed by Lynn at Performance Transmission.
Performance Transmission's phone is (303) 288-7377.
New Transmission
4r70w Transmission from a 2wd Explorer
Transmission is new, zero miles

Transmission Tag
This is a left over unit that was built in 2000

Another Tag shot...

Transmission Range Select or TRS
The TRS tells the computer what gear the transmission is in.

The unit on top is for a 1998-2000
The unit on the bottom is for a 1996

I need the 1996 style because the EEC V is from a 1996
Explorer.

Here is the new floor shifter installed. Its from a 1990 v8 Mustang.
It uses cable style linkage which is a big plus.

The column shift C4 already has the shift linkage below the shift lever.
This makes the cable style linkage an easy fit.

You can find a rod style shifter in the 4cyl 1989 Mustangs.
I had interference with the rod style linkage and the tunnel near the
rear of the shifter. Go, with a cable style linkage. The cable is
a little long but it works well.

I pulled the engin and transmission. The C4 transmission was starting
to slip some between 2nd and 3rd gear. The normal high rpms, and then
it starts to move. I gave the transmission and torque converter to
Lynn Harms of Performance Transmission. Lynn said the transmission was
a 1971 style based on where the breather is located.

So, this engine and transmission were most likely not the original. I
loose nothing by putting in a late model setup. :-) 12/30/05
